Knee Hyperextension Syndrome

Knee Hyperextension Syndrome

Description:

You have pain located around the kneecap that is aggravated with prolonged standing, walking, or possibly swimming or martial arts.  This is due to maintaining a posture of excessive knee extension or hyperextension with your knees bowed backwards.

Treatment:

  • Change posture and walking habits to eliminate knee hyperextension.
  • Strengthen the quadriceps and gluteus maximus to improve ability to control movement through these muscles rather than the knee joint.
  • Stretch the hamstrings and gastrocnemius if indicated.
  • Taping is indicated.
