Hip Extension with Knee Extension Syndrome

Hip Extension with Knee Extension Syndrome

Description:

Pain in the hamstring with hip extension or knee flexion testing.  This is due to overuse of the hamstring muscle to perform knee extension and hip extension and underuse of the gluteus maximus and quadriceps.  This could be related to postural faults of standing in hip and knee hyperextension.

Treatment:

  • Activate and strengthen the gluteus maximus to improve performance during functional activities.
  • Cue the gluteus maximus to co contract with the quadriceps in stair climbing and sit to stand.
  • Gentle hamstring stretching.
